  The FDA has put out a warning that the artificial sweetener Xylitol, although not harmful to people, can be fatal to dogs.



  Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used as an artificial sweetener that is found in many foods and products like sugar-free gum, peanut butter, toothpaste, baked goods and many other products. The use of Xylitol is ever increasing. Although these products are not intended for dogs, they often are given to them by unaware pet owners. Many times pet owners will hide medicine in peanut butter and other foods to get their dog to take it.

  According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, the number of cases of xylitol toxicosis in dogs has significantly increased since the first reports in 2002. When a dog consumes Xylitol it causes their insulin to spike. This can cause their blood sugar levels to drop dangerously low. Symptoms include vomiting, seizures, instability, and death.
